The Conquistador Equine Rescue & Advocacy Program

We rescued Conquistador in August 2001 and have celebrated every day since to have this extraordinary horse as part of our family.  In every way, Conquistador, makes our hearts happy.

Beyond that, the accomplishments of his life for people and his own species make us all wish we could have done as much for our species.

Because of Conquistador:

More than 300 horses have been rescued in the US.

Another 100 were assisted in Canada.

Anthony Merrill and Bryan Cave LLP have protected an estimated 200 to 400 wild horses in Arizona's eastern rim country.

Dr. Haight joined Sheriff Joe Arpaio's animal posse and helped establish it as the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Posse.

The information provided by a Conquistador Program volunteer to the Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit of the Maricopa County Sheriff's office led to the prosecution of the Director and closing of a "sanctuary" in which scores of horses had suffered and died.

Dr. Haight joined forces with Rita Anderson in Colorado and compassionate Colorado horse people to save 15 Peruvian horses from neglect.  Their work led to the last of the Peruvians being rescued, the person responsible for their neglect being charged, and an ongoing 20 year neglect case stopped.

Many more Peruvian horses and horses of other breeds have been rehabilitated from nelgect because of the relationship between the Conquistador Program and highly experienced trainers.

The Conquistador Program has networked across Arizona to work for equine welfare legislation with other equine rescue organizations and equine advocates.

The original neglect case from which Conquistador was rescued finally ended with the rescue of the last stallion and mares. 

Conquistador has brought joy and inspiration to individuals, like himself, who work to overcome their physical and emotional challenges.
